The districts called “invasiones” were founded in the 80s when the “campesinos” arrived in the city to find a job and occupied the slopes of the volcanoes surrounding Quito to build their homes. Despite the recognition of property rights occurred in the last decade and the improvement of public services, poverty, family disintegration, school dropout, drug addiction, alcoholism, machismo and high level of crime still persist. AVSI and Fundacion Sembrar manage the Monsignor Luigi Giussani center and organize school and after-school activities, recreational training. Support one community and 5 family kindergartens as well as family support activities and training for parents and educators. The center employs local staff and some Italian volunteers.
